What if my current individual plan is changing or not being offered in 2014?

If your plan is changing or not being offered in 2014, you have some decisions to make.  If your plan is changing you will need to evaluate how the changes will affect your coverage’s and budget. If you are not happy with the changes consider buying a new policy is an option. If your plan is being discontinued you can buy a new policy through a broker, or an agent or online.

Buying Insurance through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) you can enroll for health insurance right now. If you decide to buy insurance online you can use the government marketplace website at Once in the website you will find that there is an insurance exchange portal for every state.  Navigating the exchange and enrolling for insurance coverage is a four step procedure.

The first step is to create an account

The second step is to provide information such as your name, age, address, income and the size of your family. You may have to tell whether you use tobacco products. You may also have to enter financial information to find out if you are eligible for a tax credit or other financial aid.

The third step is to review the different insurance options, to determine which is best for you.

The final step is to actually enroll. The enrollment period last from October 1, 2013 through to March 31, 2014.

While enrolling for health insurance is not mandatory, if you do not have insurance after January 1, 2014, you could face a fine of up to $95 per adult $47.50 per child or 1% of family income whichever is greater.
