What if I need coverage before January 2014?

Enrollment for insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) began on October 1, 2013.  The effective date for policies that are purchased through the ACA insurance Marketplace is January 1, 2014. While this is good news for many uninsured people some still need insurance for the time between now and January 2014.

If you need coverage right now there are several options. For instance you can buy insurance through a through a broker or an agent or online.  You can also use the governments Plan Finder website which provides information on available plans and which will help you to compare costs and benefits.

While buying insurance is very important you should be aware that some of the protections and benefits of the ACA are not yet in effect and may not apply to your coverage.

If you buy health insurance that begins before January of 2014, be sure to find out when you can exit your policy. That will be important if you decide to switch to a marketplace health insurance plan at a later date.
