What if I currently have COBRA coverage?

If you currently have COBRA health insurance through your employer, if your child is covered by CHIP, or if you are on Medicare or Medicaid, the rollout of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will not affect you.  So you can relax and feel secure that your health insurance is in place and will not change. The people that will be affected by the ACA are the 20 to 30 million Americans that do not have health insurance.

The ACA was designed to offer a health insurance alternative for those who have been unable to purchase to health insurance due to the high cost or a pre-existing condition.  However if you have COBRA coverage that you are not satisfied with you have the option of buying insurance through the health insurance Marketplace. The insurance Marketplace provides information about various insurance policies and their features such as deductibles, physician networks and miscellaneous benefits.

If you are a U. S. citizen and want to enroll for health insurance through the insurance Marketplace you can start at healthcare.gov the federal online website. Once you enter the website you will be asked to enter your state of residence.  If your state has its own website you will be guided there. In states where the federal government is operating the exchange you will be guided to the federal portal.

You will be asked to supply information such as your name, address, age, number of people in your family, household income, employer and whether you have access to insurance elsewhere. You may also be asked if you smoke, because insurance carriers can charge tobacco users more. While at the site you have the option of applying for a federal subsidy. If you find a policy that fits your needs, you can enroll online.
